On 28th of February, a material workshop 'Make It Concradle' was held in Venlo, organised by Koekoek. About 90 people with backgrounds ranging from designers, manufacturers and FMCG attended, including two employees of reggs. The program consisted of three lectures and a workshop.
Martin Beeh – Material ConneXion Material ConneXion operates an online database and a library of samples of cradle2cradle certified materials worldwide. Mr. Beeh presented cases and materials as examples of materials from the bio and techno spheres. Materials can be found based on search criteria like fast growing, low weight, location, durability, stiffness et cetera.
Rinus van den Berg – DSM DSM is a Life Sciences and Materials Sciences company with areas in "Nutrition", "Pharma", "Performance Materials", "Polymer Intermediates" en "Base Chemicals and Materials". DSM was supplier for C2C products like the Herman Miller Chair and the C2C carpet of Shaw Industries. Mr. Van den Berg explained his vision on ‘the final interface’, an interface where earth-made materials meets the man-made goods. Where 'soup' is transformed into 'geometry'. This is the interface where the concept of sustainable design should start.
Petz Scholtus – International Eco-designer Petz Scholtus presented several eco-designs on which she has worked during her eco-design study in London and her work in Barcelona. It is al about 'learning by doing'. Some of her cases were 'stuffbump' for treehugger, Localunch (a lunch concept where work-travellers bring food into town using re-usable lunchboxes), R3 (a green apartment project) and 'MaterialiseMe'.
Workshop During the workshop about 10 teams were given a object varying from coffee machine, to iron and vacuum cleaner. Each team was asked to disassemble the product and answer several questions about how that product could be designed according to C2C in principle. It was shocking to experience how difficult and sometimes impossible it was to disassemble and separate materials for recycling. There are a lot of opportunities ahead in this field!
